Dr. Connelly Guest Blog - Disassembling Anxiety

 By Dr. Jon Connelly

Anxiety is one of the most prevalent problems of our time. Anxiety happens when the body's protective responses to perceived threat are themselves perceived as a threat by the individual. This may include physiological changes experienced by the individual as bodily sensations and mental activity experienced as troubling thoughts. When someone is experiencing anxiety, she is likely to believe that her body's innate and protective responses to perceived threat are threatening rather than an indication that her body is getting stronger in preparation for flight or fight.

Further, when the individual experiences an emotional response, she is likely to attribute it to a situation. Perceived like this, the problem has two parts, the situation and the emotional response to that situation. There is another way to view the problem. The emotional response triggered by the situation associates with other similar emotional responses from past events. The mind automatically attaches meaning to events and the meaning attached to the event associates with similar meanings. Multiple factors, many below the level of conscious awareness, are combining to create the feeling or sensation. Instead of the problem only having two components, it has many multifaceted and complicated pieces. This is a good thing because the more complex it is the easier it will be to destroy.

Consider a clock that is intricate, multifaceted and quite complicated. If we remove one tiny gear, we have turned the clock into a dust catcher. When we remove one component of the troubling emotional response, separating it from the rest, the entire response will be disabled. Certain forces hold a cloth together. If we reverse these forces, the cloth will disassemble and disappear. Indifference is the anti-matter ray that will destroy the complex structure that has been required to support the troubling feeling or bodily sensation experienced by the individual.

Clearing Substance Cravings

 By Dr. Jon Connelly

I am very interested in making it possible for people to stay on track and live drug free, so I interviewed hundreds of people who had relapsed. Some relapsed after only a day or two clean, but others had acquired 20 and even 30 years of clean time. I asked people what was going on so that I could understand the causes of relapse. Some of the people told me about unhappy things that had been happening in their lives, but others told me about things that were happy. Many people also told me that life was just going along and that there wasn't anything particularly happy or unhappy when they relapsed.

I just couldn't make sense of it, so I re-interviewed these people. I asked them this question: When you did the behavior or substance that led to the relapse were you planning to reactivate your addiction?

The answer I got was quite interesting. No, these people were not planning to reactivate their addiction. In fact they were planning NOT to. Even while taking the drink or using the drug, they were planning what they would do later that would have them back on track. I learned what the problem actually was. It has nothing to do with having a bad time in life or bad things happening. It had to do with only one problem. The processes I teach to clear substance cravings expose the real cause of relapse so that the client will never again be ambushed by a relapse. Further, these processes eliminate the possibility of relapse happening in the future as well.

Clearing Substance Addiction: Allergy Plus One

 By Dr. Jon Connelly

People who have experienced active addiction and those who have relationships with these people struggle to understand what is going on. They wonder what causes this problem to take place and cause so much misery? Most people realize that addiction has nothing to do with intelligence. We know that there are brilliant people who have become addicted and that there are people of very low intelligence who have not. I find that in general people blame the problems associated with addictive behavior on issues involving mental health, family problems, a lack of will power, strength of character, values, integrity, ethics, or morality.

Imagine a shelf with beautiful hand carved figurines that have taken thousands of hours from skilled artists to create. There is a hand puppet that picks up one of the beautiful and fragile figurines and begins to smash it. One by one these priceless works of art are destroyed. A man confronts the puppet. He has tears in his eyes due to this senseless destruction. "Why?" He asks, "Why? Why? Why?" The puppets answers: "Ask the hand."

Addictive behavior has nothing to do with mental health. There are people who are emotionally disturbed and mentally ill who have never and will never become addicted. It has nothing to do with strength of character or will power. There are addicts who are best-selling authors, mountain climbers, body builders, and concert pianists. There are people with no morality or ethics who have never become addicted just as there are compassionate and highly ethical people who have.

The AA Big Book speaks about disease and about the concept of allergy. Most people in Twelve Step programs use the word disease much more than the word allergy but I believe that allergy is a more useful concept. An allergy simply means that a particular substance is bad for someone. With most allergies the individual has no interest in repeating what was bad for him. Someone who has an allergic reaction to a bee sting is not looking to get stung again.

Think of addiction as allergy plus one. It is an allergy with one extra quality. It causes an obsessive desire to do what one is allergic to again and again. When the addiction is strong it takes over the individual's mind in the same way as the hand controls the puppet.

For someone to examine himself or become introspective in order to understand his addictive behavior makes no sense. The answer does not lie within the puppet -- it lies within the hand. When addiction is strong it can withstand the forces of reason, logic, morality, or intelligence. If you have acquired clean time you have weakened addiction. When addiction has been weakened it can be controlled and contained. The key is to continue to weaken addiction and the way to do that is to starve it. Create an embargo - a no-fly zone. Make sure it never gets fed.

Trauma Resolution and The Brain

By Melinda Paige, Ed.S, LMHC, LPC, NCC, Master Certified Practitioner, Rapid Resolution Therapy

Trauma clinicians are increasingly being asked by clients and fellow clinicians alike, "Is Rapid Resolution Therapy evidence-based?" The answer is a resounding "Yes!"

In fact, Dr. Connelly's approach and clinical hypnosis are supported in the trauma literature. A list of references is provided below for your professional development and to strengthen your ability to advocate for RRT and trauma-informed treatment. In summary, the literature suggests the following:

Painful exposure techniques are not required to clear traumatic memory. All that is required is keeping the client "emotionally present" as she describes the details of the event. This concept was introduced by trauma clinician and founder of Rapid Resolution Therapy, Dr. Jon Connelly, Ph.D, LCSW. Current neuroscience and trauma research by Bessel van der Kolk, MD and Dan Siegel, MD have also reached similar conclusions.

When we keep the client emotionally present, we are preventing the amygdala from activating the fight/flight response; amygdala activation inhibits the functioning of the hippocampus and parts of the pre-frontal cortex. The hippocampus and certain aspects of the pre-frontal cortex are responsible for integrating memory and tempering emotional responses. If these parts of the brain are inhibited, then the memory remains in the more primitive part of the brain as a non-verbal, implicit or felt memory. When a memory stays in this implicit form, associated sensory details like smells, times of year, sounds, and visual images can trigger the same feelings of terror as the original event; however, these triggers are often unconscious.

One goal of any trauma therapy is to integrate the traumatic memory into conscious, explicit memory. To accomplish this in session, trauma clinicians utilizing Rapid Resolution Therapy keep the hippocampus and pre-frontal cortex functioning rather than encouraging the client to emotionally relive the event which activates the fight/flight response and causes abreaction thereby inhibiting reprocessing and reintegration of the traumatic memory. According to Connelly (2011), in order to facilitate client recall of a traumatic event without abreaction, effective trauma therapists ground clients in the present by providing experiences in session that require clients to respond emotionally to the present situation or "what is happening."

Connelly also suggests providing opportunities for clients to be in a "power position" while retelling the trauma narrative so that the client has a resolution experience which is the antithesis of the often disempowering traumatic event. This process allows the client's central nervous system to remain within the window of tolerance for optimal reintegration of the previously traumatic memory within normal memory.

Melinda Paige, Ed.S, LMHC, LPC, NCC is the Executive Director for the Institute for Rapid Resolution Therapy and is currently an RRT Master Certified Practitioner after training with Dr. Connelly for the last six years. She has been treating survivors of trauma for the last fifteen years as well as providing counseling training at universities and conferences throughout the nation.
Melinda holds a masters degree in mental health counseling and an educational specialist degree in professional counseling.  She is currently completing her doctoral degree in counselor education and practice at Georgia State University. Melinda's treatment outcome research involves establishing Rapid Resolution Therapy in the trauma literature as an evidence-based treatment for survivors of trauma.  She is a licensed mental health counselor (Florida), a licensed professional counselor (Georgia), and a national certified counselor (NCC) in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia.

Guest RRT Blogger Mark Chidley: When Something Is Split Off

“Man, I just can’t get myself going.” I know the lawn needs cutting, and I even bought a $900 riding mower, but when I go out there and go to get on it and turn that key, I just hate it. I find myself saying, “The hell with it. I don’t care if it grows two feet, I’m not cutting it.”

In my work with hoarders I’m finding what lies beneath procrastination is often frozen or split off hurtful experiences. We isolate these and banish them to the nether regions of our minds where they continue to cast a shadow and have an effect. In RapidResolution Therapy we learn that after laying a strong foundation of connection and clearing major abusive incidents, there are sometimes “minor” incidents that still rise to the front to be taken care of and likewise cleared up. With mind already shifting and looking forward toward the new life we’ve intended together with the client, mind can now safely scan back and pick out just the right incident or string of incidents that still casts a shadow.

The fellow above had actually gotten his home about 90% cleaned up but found that certain “chores” still brought up the old resistance and the urge to give up in disgust. I asked him to stay with the picture of the ongoing success that we both knew about and, while staying with that, let mind scan back and pick out something that needed clearing. Without hesitation he went to age 12 when his dad would make him cut the front yard with an old rotary push mower and cut it again and again until it was just right.

He then made him transplant all the tulips, weed the entire flower bed, basically expecting the performance of a professional landscaper out of his son. If anything was amiss, he would dismiss him, sending him away, to do some lesser task inside the house. In other words, at age 12, if he couldn’t function like a professional, he would get demoted on the spot, treated as a rather useless day laborer and dismissed from his father’s favor. He continued, “I remember getting so frustrated with the whole thing, I’d just kick the shovels, kick the mower, and throw bags of dirt around.” He hadn’t thought about any of this consciously in years and years, and yet here it was still casting a shadow.

So I had him join me in looking back on the boy.  I told him we or no one else would look at that kid as reacting differently or worse than any other kid on the block. He was in the middle of a tough situation and he was surviving, just getting through it in the best way he knew how. Nothing happening there said anything about him. Certainly no impartial bystander would expect a kid in that situation to handle it better and most would wonder what was going on for the dad to put all that on the kid. From a more enlightened spot in the present, where we both realized he was now in terms of being an adult with 90% of his home cleared, I had him look back and watch as the boy watched us with what we realized, and slowly start to get what we knew. I asked him to watch for the change in the boy’s eyes, watch for a certain light coming into the eyes, the sign that he was getting it. He saw it, opened his eyes, and nodded his head, breathing a big sigh.

The next time we met he greeted me with a wry grin. “You know for the last couple weeks, I’ve been making a game of mowing the lawn.” “What do you mean?” I asked. “Well, there are a couple little boys that live next door. They watch me out of their window. So I went and asked their mom if it’d be okay if I let them ride on the mower with me. She said, ‘Sure’. So I bring them up in the seat and just for a moment let them take the wheel and try keeping it in a straight line. I keep my hand on the wheel, give it a bump if they lose their line, but just let them give it a try. The mom came up to me the other day telling me how they came in that night and couldn’t stop talking about riding on the mower. What a big kick they’d gotten out of that. And that helps me, ’cause I see what fun they’re having.”

When things that have been split off are reunited, the part of the self stuck in that experience is reabsorbed. As the experience is made part of the self again in a way that’s okay, mind frees all sorts of energy.  It takes all that inspiration, and puts pen to paper in new ways–ways that are unpredictable, poetic, and amazing to behold. The energy freed up from things in the past joins the energy that comes together with the combined intention of therapist and client, and as Jon Connelly so often states, it has to expand, it can’t go anywhere else but to source. It fuels the total transformation of the client stepping into his or her new life now, fully present, clear, flexible, with mind bringing into awareness all sorts of new benefits and possibilities. I couldn’t have planned a more elegant application of the use of this energy. His mind did it perfectly.
